Welcome to Amsterdam Art 21 Welcome to Amsterdam Art 21 Welcome to Amsterdam Art 21

The Amsterdam art scene seems to grow and grow and is stepping outside the city borders. Try hopping over to Het HEM, where the river IJ bends into the Noordzeekanaal. It’s a stunning location with a very surprising show, Abundance, curated by writer and philosopher Simon(e) van Saarloos, in collaboration with Stedelijk’s new curator Vincent van Velsen.

Cycling back to Amsterdam, stay on the north side of the IJ river and pay a visit to project space On the Inside, showing immersive video installations by artists such as Cyprien Gaillard, David Claerbout and Amalia Pica. Cross the river by ferry and pedal to the Rijksakademie for their Open Studios. Don’t forget to visit Otobong Nkanga’s show at Lumen Travo and an exhibition of works on paper by Natasja Kensmil, Ellen Gallagher, Kara Walker and Marlene Dumas at andriesse~eyck galerie.

Try and see at least some of the 25 Refresh Amsterdam-positions at the Amsterdam Museum and various locations. And make sure to see Bruce Nauman, the Surinamese School and Charlotte Prodger at the Stedelijk.

Rein Wolfs is director of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam as of December 2019
