About Oude Kerk
Oude Kerk is a monument, museum, church and amongst the newest contemporary art institutions in the Netherlands located in the historical (red light) district of Amsterdam.
Oude Kerk devotes its energy and resources to developing and displaying old and new art in a medieval church. Oude Kerk presents leading exhibitions around the concept of time and space. Oude Kerk commissions artists to make new, often large scaled context specific work connected to the people, architecture and world around us. Oude Kerk aims to inspire to mentally reframe the commonplace in order to create new perspectives on our times.
Exhibition Em’kal Eyongakpa, 17-26 Sep
From 17 September to 26 September, the Oude Kerk will present a sound installation by the Cameroonian artist Em’kal Eyongakpa (1981) in cooperation with the Hartwig Art Foundation. For the Oude Kerk he is developing work that stems from his artistic research into the relationship between water and sound. Sounds are the most important medium in Eyongakpa’s practice.
Exhibition Ana Guedes, 7-31 Oct
From 7 to 31 October, the Oude Kerk presents a sound installation by the Portuguese artist Ana Guedes (1981) in cooperation with the Hartwig Art Foundation. In her installations, she often interweaves historical and personal stories. Tantalised by the interplay between personal and political history reflected in her family archive, Guedes’ work reflects on the question of which stories are passed on and which are lost.
